What issue initially created a source of contention and division for Muslims into Sunni and Shi’a?

which city should serve as their capital
who should have the right to leadership
how to maintain religious tolerance
why Islam must be a monotheistic religion

Answers

Answer 1

The issue that led to the contention and division for Muslims into Sunni and Shi’a is who should have the right to leadership. Option B

What is the issues between the Sunni and Shi’a?

Although the two major Islamic sects, Sunni and Shia, concur on the majority of Islam's core principles and practices, there has been a tumultuous schism between the two for more than 14 centuries. A disagreement about who should follow the Prophet Muhammad as head of the Islamic faith he founded is where the division first began.

Shias, who go by the name Shi'atu Ali, which is Arabic for "partisans of Ali," consider Ali and his lineage to be a part of a higher power. Political succession based on Mohammed's lineage is not acceptable to Sunnis, also known as adherents of the sunna, or "way" in Arabic.

describe one example of how economic structures affected a state ability to maintain order in settlements in the period 1450 1750

Answers

One example of how economic structures affected a state's ability to maintain order in settlements during the period 1450-1750 is the case of the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottoman Empire had a highly centralized economic system, where the state controlled the production, distribution, and pricing of goods. This system was known as the "millet" system, where each religious community had its own market regulations and taxes. The Ottoman Empire's economy was heavily reliant on agriculture, and the state had a complex system of landownership, taxation, and labor mobilization.
However, as the Ottoman Empire expanded, it faced new challenges in maintaining order in its settlements. The economic structure that had worked in the core regions of the empire was difficult to implement in newly acquired territories, where local elites and economic structures had their own traditions and interests. The state had to adapt its economic policies to accommodate these local structures, which led to a decentralization of economic power.
This decentralization weakened the state's ability to maintain order in the settlements, as local elites gained more power and autonomy. They often used their economic power to challenge the authority of the state, and conflicts between different groups of elites became more common. This led to instability and insecurity in the settlements, as the state struggled to maintain control over the local economy.
Overall, the Ottoman Empire's economic structures had a significant impact on its ability to maintain order in its settlements. The centralized economic system that had worked in the core regions of the empire proved difficult to implement in newly acquired territories, leading to a decentralization of economic power that weakened the state's authority and contributed to instability and insecurity in the settlements.

When the American Revolutionary War ended, the predominant type of government in Europe was still monarchies and absolute monarchies, although the ideas and principles of the American Revolution did inspire some movements towards democracy and republicanism in Europe in the years following the war.

There were some countries in Europe that had experimented with republican or democratic forms of government during the 18th century, such as the Dutch Republic and the Swiss Confederation. However, these countries were the exception rather than the rule, and monarchies remained the dominant form of government throughout most of Europe until the 19th and 20th centuries, when many countries began to transition to democratic forms of government.

The Egyptian belief in the spiritual significance of the Nile represents an adaptation directly relating to the blending of East African custom with their own religious practices and beliefs.

The Nile River played a crucial role in the lives of the ancient Egyptians. They believed that the Nile was a divine entity, and its flooding was seen as a gift from the gods. This belief stemmed from their observation that the annual flooding of the Nile brought fertile soil, which was essential for agriculture and ensured their survival. The Egyptians incorporated this belief into their religious practices and rituals, attributing the Nile's life-giving properties to the gods. This adaptation of East African customs demonstrates how the ancient Egyptians incorporated elements from their surrounding cultures to shape their own religious beliefs and practices.

There are several weaknesses of factory owners during the Industrial Revolution. Firstly, they often employed children and paid them very low wages. What does the Policy Planning Staff (PPS) suggest will be used as a ""weapon for political action""? Are the ideas proposed by the PPS counter to concepts of ""self-determination""? Why or why not?

Answers

On the assumption that Western Europe will be rescued from communist control, the relationships between Great Britain and the continental countries, on the one hand, and between Great Britain and the United States and Canada on the other, will become for us a long term policy problem of major significance. The scope of this problem is so immense and its complexities so numerous that there can be no simple and easy answer. The solutions will have to be evolved step by step over a long period of time. But it is not too early today for us to begin to think out the broad outlines of the pattern which would best suit our national interests.

In my opinion, the following facts are basic to a consideration of this problem.

1.

Some form of political, military and economic union in Western Europe will be necessary if the free nations of Europe are to hold their own against the people of the east united under Moscow rule.

2.

It is questionable whether this union could be strong enough to serve its designed purpose unless it had the participation and support of Great Britain.

3.

Britain’s long term economic problem, on the other hand, can scarcely be solved just by closer association with the other Western European countries, since these countries do not have, by and large, the food and raw material surpluses she needs; this problem could be far better met by closer association with Canada and the United States.

4.

The only way in which a European union, embracing Britain but excluding eastern Europe, could become economically healthy would be to develop the closest sort of trading relationships” either with this hemisphere or with Africa.

It will be seen from the above that we stand before something of a dilemma. If we were to take Britain into our own U.S.-Canadian orbits according to some formula of “Union now”, this would probably solve Britain’s long term economic problem and create a natural political entity of great strength. But this would tend to cut Britain off from the close political association she is seeking with continental nations and might therefore have the ultimate effect of rendering the continental nations more vulnerable to Russian pressure. If, on the other hand, the British are encouraged to seek salvation only in closer association with [Page 511]their continental neighbors, then there is no visible solution of the long term economic problem of either Britain or Germany, and we would be faced, at the termination of ERP, with another crises of demand on this country for European aid.6

To me, there seem only two lines of emergence from this dilemma. They are not mutually exclusive and might, in fact, supplement each other very well.

In the first place, Britain could be encouraged to proceed vigorously with her plans for participation in a European union, and we could try to bring that entire union, rather than just Britain alone, into a closer economic association with this country and Canada. We must remember, however, that if this is to be really effective, the economic association must be so intimate as to bring about a substantial degree of currency and customs union, plus relative freedom of migration of individuals as between Europe and this continent. Only in this way can the free movement of private capital and labor be achieved which will be necessary if we are to find a real cure for the abnormal dependence of these areas on governmental aid from this country. But; we should also note carefully the possible implications of such a program from the standpoint of the ITO Charter.7 As I see it, the draft charter, as well as the whole theory behind our trade agreements program, would make it difficult for us to extend to the countries of western Europe special facilities which we did not extend in like measure to all other ITO members and trade agreement partners.

A second possible solution would lie in arrangements whereby a, union of Western European nations would undertake jointly the economic development and exploitation of the colonial and dependent areas of the African Continent. The realization of such a program admittedly presents demands which are probably well above the vision and strengths and leadership capacity of present governments in Western Europe. It would take considerable prodding from outside and ‘much patience. But the idea itself has much to recommend it. The African Continent is relatively little exposed to communist pressures; and most of it is not today a subject of great power rivalries. It lies easily accessible to the maritime nations of Western Europe, and politically they control or influence most of it. Its resources are still relatively undeveloped. It could absorb great numbers of people and a great deal of Europe’s surplus technical and administrative, energy.

Highlight any five factors that led to the declaration of the interior of Sierra Leone as a protectorate in 1808.

Answers

Five factors that led to the declaration of the interior of Sierra Leone as a protectorate in 1808 were: 1) British efforts to abolish the transatlantic slave trade, 2) the desire to establish control over valuable trade routes and resources, 3) conflicts and instability among local tribes, 4) strategic considerations in the context of European rivalries, and 5) the establishment of a base for missionary and humanitarian activities.

1) The British, who had established a colony in Sierra Leone, aimed to abolish the transatlantic slave trade and saw the interior as a region where slave raiding and trading persisted. The declaration of a protectorate allowed them to extend their control and influence over these areas, in line with their anti-slavery objectives.

2) The interior of Sierra Leone was known for its valuable trade routes, including those for ivory and other resources. By declaring a protectorate, the British sought to gain control over these economic opportunities and secure their commercial interests.

3) The interior of Sierra Leone was characterized by conflicts and instability among local tribes. The declaration of a protectorate allowed the British to establish a more organized and centralized authority, which could potentially bring stability and prevent intertribal conflicts.

4) European rivalries played a role in the declaration of the protectorate. The British aimed to expand their territorial claims and influence in the face of competition from other European powers, such as France, who also had interests in the region.

5) The establishment of a protectorate provided a base for missionary and humanitarian activities. The British desired to spread Christianity and undertake humanitarian efforts in the interior, and the declaration of a protectorate facilitated their presence and operations in these areas.
