In "My Life as a Bat," what are some of the main contrasts the narrator makes between humans and bats? What theme about people is developed through these contrasts?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

The author shows that human beings as well as bats kill other living beings without mercy, but bats are not hypocrites like humans in creating a war memorial in honor of bats that died in the war that they themselves provoked.

This creates the theme that even though animals show some resemblance to humans, animals are better, because they act according to instinct and are not as conscious as humans to think before their actions.

Read these paragraphs and answer the question that follows:

In 2008, more than one million American students gave nearly 20 million service hours to their communities. They made a difference in people’s lives and learned some important life lessons in the process. Organizations, including schools, are actively promoting service for all citizens as a way to be involved, help others, and improve themselves.

Service is helping other people and being active in your community. For example, one group of teens planted a community garden with their friends. They grow a variety of vegetables. The garden requires regular care. The teens donate the produce to a local soup kitchen. Workers there use the produce to help feed people in the community. By tending the garden and donating their produce, the teens are actively helping make life a bit better for others in their community.

Service is valuable in ways that cannot be measured in dollars. People volunteer or serve others without expecting money or gifts in return. Service is not about earning money. It is not just collecting money to give to a group. It is about action and contributing to the common good. The people who serve as well as those who receive help benefit in many ways that are more important than money or gifts. For example, a soup kitchen provides essential food to people who may otherwise go hungry. The soup kitchen is extremely valuable for those struggling to get enough to eat. Those serving learn about compassion and how helping others can improve life for all.

Millions of Americans are making society better for themselves and for others. They are participating citizens in their community, raising up those who are less fortunate. In return, they become better people who can understand the perspectives and needs of others, which are invaluable and important qualities of good citizens.

Gabriela only has three hours until her essay on social media is due, so she gives the essay a quick once-over for spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and sentences that might be unclear. Which step in the writing process best describes this scenario?

Answers

Answer: Editing

Explanation:

Between editing and revising (which would have been my top 2 answers at first glance), I would go with editing.

Editing is taking a second look at the writing and where you review sentence structure/wording, grammatical errors, and punctuation. This matches more to what Gabriela is doing.

Revising is the actual changing of ideas and where you cut, add, change, or move information.

Take a look at this piece written by University of Minnesota, "During revising, you add, cut, move, or change information in order to improve content. During editing, you take a second look at the words and sentences you used to express your ideas and fix any problems in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure."

Remember the Victims of Juvenile Offenders

Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins is the president of the National Organization of Victims of Juvenile Lifers.

When my pregnant 25-year-old sister and her husband were murdered by a 16-year-old, she left a last inspiring message of love in her own blood that transformed my life. The teenager who killed my sister’s family was born of privilege in the Chicago suburbs. He planned the crime for weeks and executed it alone. He had committed crimes before, but never faced serious consequences. His parents always bailed him out, never wanting him to get in real trouble. If only he had gotten in trouble the first time that he shot out people’s car windows with his BB rifle, or when he was accused of setting that girl’s sweater on fire in school, or any of his other serious early crimes. But he never faced legal consequences, so he kept going because, he told his friends, it gave him a “rush.”

Consequences are good, especially for early crimes. That's when punishment can help young people change and grow.

Most young people who commit crimes appropriately stay in the juvenile justice system which is focused on rehabilitation. But there are rare cases when older teens demonstrate heinousness and culpability and carry out truly horrific crimes. For those few a couple years of detention and programs are not enough. These individuals can be appropriately tried as adults. They need to grow older before release. They need long term evaluation to see if they will ever be able to rejoin society. And we should not rule out a sentence of life without parole in extreme cases. We must balance the victims’ families’ right to some legal finality with the likelihood that the offender will ever qualify for release. It’s a sad fact that some sociopaths start young and remain dangerous all their lives.

CaCO3 decomposes at 1200 C to form CO2 gas and CaO. If 25 L of CO2 are collected at 12000 C, what will the volume of this gas be after it cools to 250 C?

Answers

The new volume of the gas after it has cooled to 250 °C is 8.88 L

How to determine the new volume

Let's begin by listing the parameters given in the question. This is shown below:

Initial temperature (T₁) = 1200 °C = 1200 + 273 = 1473 KInitial volume (V₁) = 25 L New temperature (T₂) = 250 °C = 250 + 273 = 523 KNew volume (V₂) =?

The new volume can be obtained as illustrated below:

V₁ / T₁ =V₂ / T₂

25 / 1473 = V₂ / 523

Cross multiply

1473 × V₂ = 25 × 523

1473 × V₂ = 13075

Divide both side by 1473

V₂ = 13075 / 1473

V₂ = 8.88 L

When Paul calls Tillens to explain what is happening at the hotel, he takes time to say farewell and thank the president of Sabena. Why do you think the screenwriters included this detail?

Answers

The inclusion of Paul taking the time to say farewell and thank the president of Sabena in the scene where he calls Tillens to explain what is happening at the hotel could serve a few possible purposes:

1. Character development: It could be a way to show Paul's courteous and appreciative nature. By taking the time to express his gratitude and bid farewell to the president, it highlights his respectful and polite demeanor.

2. Emotional connection: The screenwriters might have wanted to evoke a sense of sentimentality or nostalgia. By showing Paul expressing gratitude and saying goodbye, it adds an emotional touch to the scene, emphasizing the importance of the relationship or the impact the president had on Paul's life.

3. Realism or authenticity: If the story is based on true events or inspired by real people, including this detail could be a way to stay true to the actual interactions that took place. It adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative, giving viewers a glimpse into the personal connections and interactions that occurred during that time.\(\)

however other research suggests that negative reactions suppressed in this way may adversely affect one’s abilities’ and outlook over time

Answers

Suppressing negative reactions is a common coping mechanism employed by individuals to manage their emotions in various situations. The idea behind this approach is to inhibit the expression of negative emotions such as anger, sadness, or frustration, in order to maintain composure and avoid conflict. While it may seem beneficial in the short term, there is evidence to suggest that long-term suppression of negative reactions can have negative consequences on one's abilities and overall outlook.

When individuals consistently suppress their negative reactions, they deny themselves the opportunity to process and address the underlying causes of those emotions. Emotions serve as valuable signals that inform us about our needs, values, and boundaries. By suppressing these emotions, individuals may miss important cues and fail to address the root causes of their negative experiences. This can lead to unresolved issues, increased stress levels, and a lack of personal growth.Furthermore, research indicates that prolonged suppression of negative reactions can have detrimental effects on cognitive functioning. When individuals continuously push away negative emotions, it can drain their mental resources and impair their ability to focus, problem-solve, and make sound decisions. This cognitive depletion can hinder performance in various domains, including work, relationships, and personal well-being.In addition, suppressing negative reactions can impact one's outlook on life. Emotions provide valuable information about our subjective experiences and help us make sense of the world around us. By suppressing negative emotions, individuals may create a skewed perception of reality, where they fail to acknowledge and address challenges or conflicts. This can lead to a distorted perspective, decreased resilience, and difficulties in effectively navigating life's ups and downs. In conclusion, while suppressing negative reactions may offer temporary relief or immediate benefits, it is important to consider the potential long-term consequences. Research suggests that prolonged suppression of negative reactions can adversely affect one's abilities and outlook over time. It is crucial for individuals to find healthy ways to manage and express their emotions, such as through self-reflection, seeking support from others, and practicing emotional regulation techniques. By acknowledging and addressing negative reactions in a constructive manner, individuals can foster personal growth, maintain cognitive functioning, and cultivate a balanced and resilient outlook on life.
